What We Do
Whether you want to try a new sport, swim for fitness, or compete internationally, the University of Bath Swimming Club provides training and competition opportunities to all. There are no limits as to how much you can learn and progress with our world-class training facilities and sessions.
With over 200 members, we have a long tradition of success with swimmers breaking National Records, and competing at BUCS, Commonwealth Games, and Olympic Games. We also host regular social events throughout the semester, so if you’re looking to have fun and get involved, these are great ways to meet new people!
Our club is split into three squads: Development, Competitive and Peformance. Each squad varies in level, flexibility and intensity as outlined below.
So go ahead and get involved – we can’t wait to meet you!
Development Squad
A fun and relaxed squad with complete flexibility over training times. This is perfect for those who want to get back into swimming and improve their fitness. With 2-3 optional training sessions a week with no expectations, this is ideal for those who are nervous to return to the sport or just want to join to be a part of the community.
Prior to joining the development squad, you will be asked to swim 50m at any pace in any stroke. This will ensure the lifeguards that you are comfortable in the water. Unfortunately the swimming club cannot offer lessons to non-swimmers. In order to join you must be a competent swimmer comfortable in a 50m pool.
Competitive Squad
For those who want to maintain the flexibility of the development squad but still push themselves and perform well at target meets. Our competitive scheme offers 7 training sessions a week coached by GB swimmer Luke Turley. This squad competes across the country in BUCS, Varsity and BUSL, giving the swimmers the opportunity to represent their university on a national level.
Performance Squads
The performance swimming programme is designed for swimmers who are working towards International, European, Commonwealth, and World Championships with the aim of achieving Olympic Qualification. Led by head coach Mark Skimming and Dr. Andrei Vorontsov, Olympic coach to Russia and Sweden, the programme includes upwards of 20 hours of swimming per week alongside multiple gym sessions. Performance squad is by invitation only from head coach Mark Skimming. As one of the most successful teams at the University, the performance programme allows athletes to reach their full potential whilst also gaining a degree from a world-class university.
