University of Bath Blues Awards Winners 2014
Students, staff members, coaches, volunteers, Olympians and Paralympians were among those who received an award at the 40th Blues ceremony, with more awards given out than ever before due to the outstanding commitment and support that has been provided within sport.
Below lists the recipients of all awards from this year.
Sports Personality of the Year - Fran Wilson
Fran Wilson is someone that can be defined and exemplified as a true leader. Not only has she captained the women’s 1st football team to new heights of success for two seasons, Fran is an England cricket international athlete.
A regular in the England Academy women’s team and England Cricket Board Development women's XI since a young age, Fran is one of the most hardworking and passionate athletes in the squad. Fran leads by example and consistently demonstrates qualities both sporting and personal, that her younger teammates can learn from.
Whilst organising her time between ECB commitments and her many volunteer roles within SU Sport and the wider community, Fran continues to maintain first class standards in her studies as she looks towards becoming a well-experienced and qualified nutritionist. Fran is a credit to ECB, UOBFC, her many proud team mates but most importantly herself. A caring, loyal and incredibly humble individual, Fran is a role model for young girls and boys alike; she is proof that you can sustain friendships, work rates and volunteer commitments all whilst building an elite sporting career.
Martyn Hedges Award - Michael Pooley
This is the highest accolade that is awarded by the University of Bath Blues Committee. This year is was received by head groundsman Michael Pooley. Mike has been supporting student sport for over 25 years, tirelessly working with his team of Grounds staff to ensure that the facilities are in the best condition for participation and competition.
The Ivor Powell Award - Dan Harris
This award is received for demonstrating qualities of excellence in a coach. Dan Harris picked up this award. Dan started as the GB rowing team Start Programme coach at the University in September 2011. His goal is to find and develop athletes with a view to producing world class athletes capable of making it into the GB rowing senior team. Dan has taken on the challenge to develop these athletes and his programme is starting to succeed producing two athletes striving to make it into GB U23 teams this year, using the university rowing club as his platform.
Tugendhat Trophy - Sam Courty
This award recognises achieved by student athletes in areas that before their arrival at university were unfamiliar to them. Sam Courty came to Bath a keen horse rider and was introduced to rowing as a novice in the University rowing club. It became clear for the outset that Sam was a gifted rower of considerable strength.
When the rowing club acquired their first professional coach, he immediately spotted Sam’s dedication and potential and guided her and the other novice women to win gold in a Women's Beginner 4+. From then on Sam was addicted to rowing. Taking on the role of senior captain, Sam progressed through her second year before being noticed by Dan Harris, the GB Start coach.
The Gethin John Bevan Club Member of the Year - Stuart Gordon
Stuart came to the University as a keen sprint & marathon kayaker, immediately drawn to the University canoe club. Bringing experience from his exploits as a sprint kayaker, Stuart set the quickest recorded times from Bath at his first BUCS Wild Water Racing event. In his 2nd year at the University, Stuart remained in place as chair of the canoe club and decided to take up rowing simultaneously as a novice, racing in numerous events for the University. After a year out on placement Stuart returned to the University with a desire to pick up his involvement with the rowing club. His engaging personality and hard-working attitude made him a well-liked and respected member of the club and he was elected as Chairman. In addition to his role as Rowing Chair, Stuart was also elected by his peers to be a Treasurer on the Students’ Union Sport Exec.
BUCS Team of the Year - Women's Netball 1st
The 1st team historically perform well and consistently achieve big wins. In 2012 they achieved a record goal difference of more than 500 goals as well as remaining undefeated and securing 1st place in the Premier league. In 2013 the team once again secured top position in the Premier South Division.
Club of the Year - Kickboxing
The Bath University kickboxing club has an impressive history in competition, with 2012-2013 resulting in over 120 medals from a range of competitions on an inter-university, national and international stage. The club is frequently accused of “taking the medals’ table”, for example in the recent P.U.M.A. British competition the club took 25 fighters and came home with 24 medals. The most well-known events are the inter-university Fight Nights hosted here in Bath, the last of which saw Bath win emphatically against Loughborough in front of 750 spectators. The club also offers its members the opportunity to work towards internationally recognised belts from a prestigious organisation (with a 100% pass rate so far this year) as well as working towards various self-defence and fitness goals.
