The SU at the University of Bath has received an award at a special parliamentary reception to mark students’ unions high standards of management.
The Quality Students’ Union (QSU) framework assesses unions against twelve indicators based on all aspects of the organisation, from representation and governance to people and impact.
Organised by the National Union of Students (NUS), QSU is a collaboration between the NUS, students’ union staff and officers, and other sector partners.
The scheme focuses on building stronger students’ unions, assuring students and stakeholders of the quality of their unions, and championing the value of students’ unions for the benefit of students.
Representatives from The SU picked up the award on Thursday 18 July at a parliamentary reception at the House of Commons hosted by Paul Blomfield MP, Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Students.
Mandy Wilson-Garner, Deputy Chief Executive of The SU, said: “The SU is proud to have been rated ‘excellent’ and ‘very good’ against the majority of indictors.
“During a rigorous verification process where the verifiers reviewed extensive evidence and visited The SU to meet with a wide array of stakeholders, including staff, students, trustees, senior university staff and student officers, we received excellent feedback.
“We are already working on some useful recommendations for further development.”
Eve Alcock, SU President, said: “At The SU we believe that students can and want to shape the community they are part of for the better.
“Having a strong management framework in place means that we can support students as they come together to do just that.
“Students and staff work hard to make sure that The SU plays a key role throughout the student experience at Bath, and it is great to have that recognition for the quality of what they do.”
Professor Peter Lambert, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Learning & Teaching), said: “For those of us who work closely with them, it is clear that Bath’s students’ union operates at the very highest levels. It is good to see how well regarded The SU is within the national context too, and this recognition within their peer group is well deserved. The University works in close partnership with the students’ union to ensure that the student voice informs decision-making within the University, and we look forward to building on this strong platform in the years ahead.”
