Upcoming:

We have a give-it-ago Friday (11th) 6:15-8;15 in Chancellor's Building 3.10! We'll have snacks as usual :). You can see more info above, and you don't need to have indicated availability to come/bring friends!

In this first session we will learn about some of the practical constraints we face when trying to do as much good as possible. We will also learn about some key cognitive biases we face that can prevent us from prioritizing the most effective causes. Finally, we will see just how much more impact some charities can have than others, and why that matters.

There’ll be a presentation, some time to dive into topics, and a group discussion (~2 hours).

📖 Our recommended readings for this week are:

Introduction to effective altruism (15 mins.) (https://www.effectivealtruism.org/articles/introduction-to-effective-altruism)

Comparing charities: How big is the difference? (5 mins.) (https://www.givingwhatwecan.org/charity-comparisons)

The moral imperative towards cost-effectiveness (10 mins.) (https://www.givingwhatwecan.org/research/the-moral-imperative-towards-cost-effectiveness)

If you'd like to do the readings with others, feel free to come at 5:45 to work through the readings together! We'll do a presentation summarising and expanding on them, but it's not a perfect substitute for reading it yourself.

About Us

The Effective Altruism (EA) Club at the University of Bath is dedicated to helping students make a meaningful impact on the world. We focus on using evidence and careful reasoning to identify the most effective ways to do good and take action based on these insights. As part of a global movement, we aim to foster a community where students can explore how to maximize their positive impact, both during their time at university and in their future careers.

Our club offers career planning resources, an introduction fellowship program, and regular social events. Through these activities, we provide opportunities for members to learn about high-impact career paths, engage in thought-provoking discussions, and connect with like-minded individuals who share a passion for making the world a better place.

Our initiatives:

Introduction Fellowship Program: An introduction to key concepts in Effective Altruism, equipping you with the knowledge and skills necessary to apply these principles in your life and career.

Social Events: Because we're not altruistic machines! A community is vital for helping each other feel good doing good and besides quiz nights, also provides opportunities to connect and share ideas.
Screenings of Movies, Collaborations and More

We'll start give-it-a-go sessions for our intro fellowship, beginning 7th of October. We'll update here with more information and create a poll to determine times soon
