Formalise an institutional policy regarding recognition of student leadership roles through providing credit and recognition on transcripts

Lead Officer: David Lam, SU Activities Officer

What is the issue about?

With the high cost-of-living in Bath, students are continually being forced to make the choice between working, studying and attending extracurricular activities. Extracurricular activities are usually the first to go when choosing between these three. Students are frequently asking themselves: is university worth it?  Having credit bearing schemes for student leader roles puts extra-curricular activities back on the table, allowing students to develop transferable skills for the future workplace.

We know that the leadership roles that students undertake through volunteering are essential to the fabric of the University experience; whether in building communities, creating a sense of belonging, improving educational outcomes, helping to shape the University, supporting peers to develop skills, building values of citizenship etc, we must ensure that we do not lose this precious resource and culture at our University.

What are we asking the University to do?

We are asking the university to formally recognise the contribution of our student volunteers and leaders on the degree transcript. With the high cost-of-living in Bath students are continually being forced to make the choice between working, studying and attending extracurricular activities. Having credit bearing schemes that recognise the efforts and contributions of the student volunteers makes attending extracurriculars more attractive and aids in professional development.

What will success look like?

  1. Recognition of student volunteering roles on the degree transcript in the form of a credit bearing scheme, starting with a pilot of extra credit modules to certain departments by the next academic year with a wider roll out by 2026/27.
  2. The university will work with the SU to provide a suitable framework to verify the work which student leaders have put in to qualify for the role to be put on the transcript.
  3. Have adequate resourcing provided by the university to increase capacity to verify applications.
