About us
A thoughtful community of University of Bath students who enjoy extracurricular learning and engaging discussions. We organise weekly meetups on campus to discuss a wide range of topics from religion, to critical theory, to the ethics of AI. We aim to facilitate cross-disciplinary discourse whilst exposing our members to new ideas and concepts.
If you're the curious or contemplative type, then our society is just for you! No prior knowledge is required and Bath University offers no philosophy courses, so this is the only place to learn about philosophy (and related disciplines from psychoanalysis to cybernetics) while you're at Bath!
We will be announcing each week’s topic and any socials on Instagram @bathphilsoc and on our WhatsApp group (https://chat.whatsapp.com/JjJjAUfQku48yKJx56OCvM). Follow and join so you don't miss any updates!
What are our weekly sessions like?
Session topics are posted on the WhatsApp group a few days before each session. Sessions have a short (or long) presentation on a theme (or thinker) followed by a discussion with the presenter on their topic in a large group circle.
Past ~8pm we see smaller free flowing groups with involved discussions that can last deep into the night. You can arrive and leave as early or as late as you'd like- no pressure!
What else does the society offer?
We announce events hosted by other societies that may be of interest to our members. We also host pub socials and movie nights that are announced on our social media pages (see above). PhilSoc socials and sessions are great ways to make friends whilst learning skills from [playful] debating to critical thinking.
If you have any questions, feel free to drop us an e-mail at su-bups@bath.ac.uk or send a message on WhatsApp/Instagram. We're always happy to answer any questions!
